International Audiovisual Market, Co-production, The numbers as of October 2024

Tenth edition of Mia

Over 100 audiovisual works produced in 10 years of the co-production market, record number of applications with 600 projects received from 90 nations from all continents, meetings, panels and events, keynotes and showcases for 60 Italian and international titles among the most anticipated of the next season between Animation, Doc & Factual, Drama and Film; an Innovation program for the creative industries and a showcase with 13 immersive works.

Born in 2015 to support the internationalization of Italian audiovisual companies, the MIA has grown to become a fundamental event for the global audiovisual industry, a curatorial market that embraces the different needs of a dynamic ecosystem that includes different genres with needs, production paradigms and different distribution systems, designed for distinct audiences and with particular attention to the most innovative technologies applied to audiovisual production.

A strategic player in the entire value chain, from co-production, to the development and circulation of works and talents, in the direction of renewed research and discovery of unpublished titles, ready for distribution and market release.

In 10 years Mia has become a reliable partner for market players, a platform for the discovery of new projects and a business incubator. This year the Mia celebrates its 10 years of activity, with a program full of novelties and an editorial path that will lead to the discovery of all those works which, thanks to their participation in the Mia, have found creative, productive, financial and distribution partners which have allowed the production of over 100 works including films, series, animation works and documentaries.

This tenth edition saw a record number of applications with over 600 projects registered in the Co-Production Market – +20% compared to 2023 – from 90 nations on all continents. Of these, approximately 60 will be presented, including animation works, documentaries, drama (serial products) and films.

“The collaborations and exchanges that arise here at MIA give more strength to the entire market, Italian and international. Let us develop and invest in a culture of dialogue and mutual knowledge, a prospect of peace in years of war and hatred” the President of Anica underlined during the event.

“The message that comes from the tenth edition of Mia is truly promising. The presence of personalities, production and distribution companies and creatives from all over the world who want to collaborate with Italian companies is very encouraging and demonstrates the sustained growth of our industries”.

“Now the industries are integrated and the market is transforming. Those who work in this chain know that they have to deal with the audience in the room, their interests and their curiosities. A demanding public that often surprises those who bring them the product. Suffice it to say that two films considered outsiders, such as Paola Cortellesi’s and ‘Inside Out 2’, have grossed almost 100 million euros combined. This shows that the public is looking for emotions, content and products that are not necessarily successful at the start.”

“At the same time, streaming is today an essential part of the supply chain – continued the President of Anica – given that we have numerous realities where audiovisual content is disseminated to hundreds of millions of people. This is a changing market, it is an industry made up of companies that are aware that they need to collaborate.”

“There are many Film Commissions that bring their projects, their incentives and the opportunities for valorising the territories to MIA: when they film in other parts of Italy there is an incredible impact from a tourist point of view, as well as investments direct, growth of workers and new professional figures. It is no coincidence that competition is growing everywhere to provide financing, incentives and tax reductions to the audiovisual and cinema industries, given that their ability to produce industrial factors of economic and employment growth is among the highest in the world”.
