The European Parliament adopts the Report on the Music Streaming Market<\/p>\n
The first step towards EU legislation to ensure transparency and cultural diversity on all music streaming platforms.<\/p>\n
On January 17, the European Parliament adopted the\u00a0report on “Cultural diversity and conditions for authors in the European music streaming market”.<\/p>\n
The report recognizes the significant problems faced by creators and suggests initiatives at Union level to lay the foundations for a fairer and more sustainable ecosystem in an ever-growing market.<\/p>\n
In its\u00a0press release, GESAC \u2013 the European Group of Societies of Authors and Composers, of which SIAE is part\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u201capplauds the European Parliament’s strong commitment to addressing creators’ concerns and welcomes the call for EU legislation to ensure transparency and cultural diversity across all music streaming platforms.”<\/p>\n
Despite the massive consumption of music online \u2013\u00a0we read in the press release \u2013, the availability of over 100 million songs on streaming platforms and the exponential growth of music streaming on platforms purely dedicated to streaming, on social media or on content platforms uploaded by users, the market represents a precarious situation for the majority of authors and composers rather than providing them with a fair remuneration with which to build a sustainable career.<\/p>\n
Problems<\/p>\n
The report highlights current imbalances in revenue sharing, insufficient overall revenue growth, fraudulent and unfair practices in the marketplace that disadvantage creators, and the imminent threat to cultural diversity from harmful streaming manipulation practices and content proliferation generated by artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
End<\/p>\n
The text, just adopted in Strasbourg, proposes initiatives at Union level, asking the Commission to propose legal provisions to guarantee the transparency of algorithms and content recommendation systems of streaming platforms, as well as positive obligations to evaluate and guarantee visibility and the\u00a0discoverability\u00a0of European works.<\/p>\n

The President of GESAC declares: \u201cWith the adoption of the report on the Music Streaming Market, the European Parliament sends a strong signal of recognition and understanding of the needs of creators. The issue of fair remuneration in the streaming market must be resolved, not only for the benefit of creators, but also for culture to remain a significant driver of the European economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Director General of GESAC adds: “The European Parliament clearly stands in favor of the authors by showing its support for their legitimate request for fairness. The music streaming market must adequately remunerate those who are at the center of its success and achieve the high standards of cultural diversity that Europe expects.<\/p>\n
Is the time to act at Union level and we count on the European Commission to take the next step and present the necessary legislative proposals.”<\/p>\n
